Russian Hill residents try to keep this neighborhood haunt a secret. They know if word got out, they might have to wait for their favorite table. Service is warm and neighborly, and many of the folks on the gray-cushioned benches are regulars, returning for Milano's hospitality and food.
The kitchen here excels at turning out deeply flavored dishes with a delicious balance of tastes and textures. Veal is very good here - try the grilled chop with rosemary and sage, or veal slices rolled and filled with prosciutto, fontina, chicken liver, garlic, and parsley. There is an extensive selection of pastas, almost all of which are homemade, and a good wine list.
Press Reviews
"Pasta is excellent, particularly the spaghetti Milanese with ground meat and a light sauce with just a hint of tomato. It's so good that when the waiter brought an order to another table, the guy stopped talking in midsentence and became flushed, as if he'd just reunited with a long-lost love...and what could well be the best tiramisu in town." - San Francisco Chronicle - July, 2003
"Although this ristorante is located up on Russian Hill, you might easily feel like you're eating on one of Rome's famous seven, what with the tasty cucina (reminds me of grandma's) and authentic Italian waiters offering insight and attentiveness" - Zagat Survey, 2003
